The Lynching Waltz by
Stephen L. Kanne

The Lynching Waltz—the story of how a small community came to the defense of its black children in 1947 and unwittingly sowed the early seeds of the Civil Rights Movement.

Inspired by an actual racist incident of the author’s youth, this is a remarkable story of how the good people of tiny Glencoe, Illinois, blunted a racist assault against its black children. Because all participants are gone and because what precisely occurred is unknown, the book has become a work of historical fiction.

Seen through the eyes of a black grandfather, retired federal judge James Lincoln Washburn Jr., and his twelve-year-old grandson, Jamie, the reader is carried away on a whirlwind journey of discovery which includes

-a meeting with Bucky, the greatest baseball player of all time who never played;

-an encounter with large, oafish Bruno Steiner, a WWI hero who eventually becomes a great friend of Glencoe’s children;

-a brutal, senseless racist atrocity perpetrated by the Ku Klux Klan;

-a Tuskegee aviator’s perilous adventure in the flak-filled skies over Europe; and

-the tale of a brilliant slave who changes the lives of thousands.

With their journey of discovery now at an end, Judge Washburn and Jamie return to Glencoe where they witness the uplifting manner in which its citizens deal with racial injustice.

And, finally, in an Epilogue of both surprises and closure, the author promises a sequel on the shameful internment of Japanese Americans during WWII, yet another event of his youth.

Now in his 80’s, author Kanne has carried Lynching’s story with him throughout his lifetime before finally deciding to tell it. And why did it take so long? Because racism is ugly and difficult to deal with—as evidenced by his disgusting and nauseatingly uncouth racist characters—and writing his book required more than just exposing truth if he ever hoped to bring about change. Mr. Kanne has dared to humanize what up until now most considered something to be hidden and forgotten. Instead of merely describing the horrors of racism, Mr. Kanne’s characters come alive. We learn of their brilliance, determination and courage as they relate to us their stories of survival and loss, of living and loving, of reaching beyond shattered dreams to become all they can be in our imperfect world. And the result? A modern-day classic of extraordinary importance.

Although historical fiction, The Lynching Waltz is an inspiring and moving tale, one designed for all of us—most particularly for every high school and college student throughout the land. We see it as seeding a national discourse on racism and why that divisive evil must forever be purged from our way of life.

Here’s what nationally-syndicated columnist Bill Husted had to say about The Lynching Waltz

I covered the civil rights movement as a newspaper reporter years ago. It was an exciting time and occasionally a dangerous time. I was beaten by white mobs on two occasions. I remember my editor—after I telephoned from the field to tell him of the latest beating—saying (safely from afar by phone) "they can't do that to us, you get right back there."

You can get back there yourself now, courtesy of Steve's magnificent book. You will travel back in history and meet a cast of memorable characters—each with his or her own story that will let the reader see how we got to where we are now—both the good and the bad—in race relations.

Oftentimes when a book attempts to send a message, things get overly preachy and self-righteous. Not here. This book lets the story carry its own weight, takes the reader back using a whole cast of characters who feel real, feel right. It's a series of well told tales that has importance not only for what it says but how it says it.

This is Steve's second book and it's spellbinding. His first book was a fine read but this second book is an important read.

The Lynching Waltz eBook Stephen L Kanne

Racial tensions still exist in America after slavery ended over 150 years ago. Steve's book, The Lynching Waltz, gives us hope we can overcome these racist attitudes wherever they exist. You will experience a sideline view of one's family history as told by a grandfather as he journeys through time with his grandson. While, at times, it may not be comfortable to be this close to the action, it is necessary in order to appreciate the steps many have taken to bring us together.

I was too young to appreciate the civil rights movement of the sixties. Events which happened prior to my teen years I've learned through education and reading. While not an educator, I feel this is an important read for high school students around the country. This is yet another tool for understanding which, hopefully, helps to eradicate racism.

The Lynching Waltz eBook Stephen L Kanne Reviews

THE BOOK BROUGHT TO LIFE AN A SUPERB WAY THE HUMAN STORIES THAT HAVE TO ACCOMPANY SUCH A WRENCHING EPISODE IN OUR NATIONAL LIFE AS WAS SLAVERY AND ITS AFTERMATH TO THE CURRENT TIME. I READ IT NONSTOP ONCE I STARTED - VERY GRIPPING
Wonderful work of historical fiction. Stephen Kanne uses a creative approach in exploring the issues of racial discrimination over the years by way of several sub stories that come together in the end. An excellent and educational read!
This is an important book about the history of race relations in America, from pre-Civil War to the present. A fascinating series of vignettes woven together, especially the details of a slave-ship mutiny and its aftermath, and the previously-unknown background to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Fascinating twists and turns. Highly recommend.
The book grabbed me from the first page. I couldn't put it down. The book does a wonderful job of weaving 5 different stories together and making a connection between them and the present situation. The book caused me to do a lot of thinking. This book would be very appropriate for young adults. It would stimulate discussion and thought on a very important issue that our society is grappling with. In fact. I think it should be mandatory reading for high school students. Some of the book is hard to read because of the horror of what is being described. But, that is why the book is so good and effective. It is realistic. It helps a person FEEL history and not just know it.
As you read Stephen Kanne's novel, The Lynching Waltz, let your mind step into the stories. For it is a collection of stories that pull you into another time when EQUAL didn't really mean equal. It hurts the soul to read of such bigotry, a betrayal that reaches to the very foundation of our country's promise to all people.
Follow twelve-year-old Jamie through his learning journey with his black grandfather, a retired federal judge, as he introduces Jamie to the history of his ancestors of the long ago past. As each story unfolds, a hunger is born inside Jamie. And I, too, experienced that same hunger. I read each story knowing that the writer would link each one. I knew this because I sensed the integrity in the 'feel' of his words, how he handled each scene in such careful usage of cradling the moments of sheer unbelief.
Even though this book is a novel in form, there are enough truths woven into the stories that it sits as a work of truths to be revisited again and again in a reader's mind long after closing the book.
I highly recommend this book to people who have a thirst for knowledge, a love of people, ALL People, and an unquenchable desire to read good books.

Important new perspective on racism, and not just some newly learned horrors. There are far-reaching effects on all survivors.
Stephen Kanne has written a spellbinding story that digs deeply into the racial injustice for which our country is so desperately in need of a solution.  His wonderful blend of well-crafted fictional and nonfictional characters led me through a range of emotions from total and absolute disgust to blissful jubilation. This is a must-read book for anyone trying to understand America’s history of racial injustice and what hope we have of overcoming it in the future.

During a multi-week home exchange in Berlin I visited many sites and museums trying to understand what precipitated the horrific and despicable treatment of Jews in the Hitler era. My quest to understand the cause was inconclusive but what is being done to prevent a future re-occurrence was much clearer. The Germans have faced their past head on.  Reminders of the holocaust permeate their culture with the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe being a prime example.  The horrible truth about the holocaust has been exposed and, through that exposure, allowed the Germans to make positive and dramatic changes to their culture. We need to do the same and Stephen Kanne’s The Lynching Waltz is a powerful step in that direction.
